Bootleg Gallery 2

A lot of realistic-looking forgeries were issued in the early 1990s from the state of Louisiana. Our Goldmine magazine poster cover story, found on this Web site, goes into the story of these “New Orleans fakes” in great detail. Here are a few representative samples… all of them completely cooked up by the forger.

I will pay top dollar for authentic concert posters by any of these artists. In the meantime, details on this page’s counterfeit posters: Louis Armstrong and the “Brown Skin Follies” at the Rhythm Club in New Orleans, Oct. 22, 1944; Charlie Parker at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada, May 15, 1953; the Jimi Hendrix Experience at City Park Stadium in New Orleans, Aug. 1, 1968; Fats Domino at Lincoln Beach in New Orleans, July 21, 1960; The Beatles at City Park Stadium in New Orleans, Sept. 16, 1964; Little Richard and Guitar Slim at Lincoln Beach in New Orleans, July 4 & 5, 1959*; Muddy Waters at Dave Brown’s Blue Eagle in New Orleans, May 24, 1957; Little Walter at Dave Brown’s Blue Eagle in New Orleans, March 16, 1957; Big Joe Turner vs. Smiley Lewis at the Dew Drop Inn in New Orleans, March 12, 1955; Elvis Presley at Pontchartrain Beach in New Orleans, Aug. 9, 1956; the same poster in its colorful “split fountain” version; and Howlin’ Wolf, Elmore James and Little Junior Parker at Dave Brown’s Blue Eagle in New Orleans, April 18, 1959.

Here’s a good example of how the bootleggers got caught. The weekend combination of Saturday & Sunday, July 4 & 5 occurred only in 1953, 1959 and 1964 within that era. Well, it can’t be from 1953, because the poster lists “Tutti-Frutti” and “Lucille” under Little Richard’s name, and those records were hits for him years later. So the next logical guess is 1959. The trouble is… Guitar Slim died six months earlier, on February 7, 1959. Oops. (A poster like this was never printed half-a-year ahead of time.) The pirates slipped up, and this is not the lone example of them goofing with the New Orleans fakes.
